This is the third volume in the series on the development of the Left Opposition in the USSR during the 1920s. It was mostly written in exile in Central Asia by Trotsky. It deals with the Sixth Congress of the Communist International, the dangers of Thermidor, the split between Bukharin and Stalin, and his approach to the "conciliators", apart from other material concerning the Left Opposition.
An introduction, editorial notes preceeding each selection, and a glossary of unfamiliar names and terms help the reader become acquainted with the major events of 1928, both internationally and within the Soviet CP and the Opposition, and offer some background about the main issues in the debate.
